We continue to work Big Traverse Bay with crawler harnesses drifting mostly in the 30-31 foot of water range

We continue to work Big Traverse Bay with crawler harnesses drifting mostly in the 30-31 foot of water range.  We have mixed it up some, heading to some sand or rock areas of Little Traverse.  The quantity of keeper size has been really good close by, about 5 miles out of the Lighthouse Gap.  Trolling with plugs seems to be effective for big Walleye in most areas of the lake.

Orange and Yellow seem to be the preferred colors.  The sky has been mostly clear of clouds but we have a smoke covering which makes it look really hazy out all day long.

We are excited for the prospect of a little rain this week.  Small amounts are forecasted with temps in the mid-60s and 80s.

Great week of fishing leading up to Independence Day

Great week of fishing leading up to Independence Day

Great week of fishing leading up to Independence Day. We had a few scorching hot days but otherwise it’s been a great week for fishing. Captain Scott says they have been mostly in the main basin, about 33’ of water. Spinners with nightcrawlers or leeches has been working really well. A lot of slot fish and quite a few trophies being caught. We have a little bit of a slow down after the holiday with spots on boats available before ramping back up for the second half of summer. It’s a great time to get some fishing done on Lake of the Woods!

The forecast for the coming week looks a little cooler with temps hopping between the mid-60s and 80s, with some mild wind thrown in and some possible showers, which we still desperately need.

Happy 4th of July! Stay safe and have a wonderful holiday.

Warmer temps and light wind have warmed up the water column quickly

Warmer temps and light wind have warmed up the water column quickly

So much going on.  Warmer temps and light wind have warmed up the water column quickly.  Fish were feeding heavy early last week, the last couple of warm calm days have gotten them a bit more tight lipped.  We have had large hatches of fish flies and the other amounts of forage seem to allow them to go without aggressively eating the last couple days.   Some will call this the starting of a transition period where we see a deeper mud bite and trolling with plugs is more likely to generate a reaction strike as apposed to a live bait feeding bite.

We are still covering both Big and Little Traverse Bays.  Mostly we have been drifting with spinners, crawlers or leeches work well. The forecast is looking great for the week ahead.  Most days with highs in the 70’s.

If you like wind, there has been plenty of it

If you like wind, there has been plenty of it

If you like wind, there has been plenty of it. Our boats have moved mainly to trolling with spinners now, with the hot item being crawler harnesses in chartreuse or an orange/chartreuse mix. We are still covering Big Traverse and Little Traverse Bays with good success. Lots of slot sized fish and quite a few trophy sized ones being caught, with plenty of good eaters being brought back.

Weather wise it’s going to be a colder beginning of the week with high’s not quite reaching 60 with rain and wind, before warming up later in the week to the 80s once again. Should get a few days of sunshine before another chance of storms for the weekend. The rain is greatly needed both in the water systems, but also for the whole area, so hope for overnight showers with clear, beautiful days.

Stay safe and hope to see everyone soon!

Lake of the Woods, Frenemy=wind

Lake of the Woods, Frenemy=wind

Lake of the Woods, Frenemy=wind.  Some days the wind is all that matters, we have had wind in different forms this past week.  One day is a perfect breeze for a nice drift of Walleye and the next day it is so strong you find yourself fishing in locations you would not have chosen otherwise.  This past week, we even had times we wish there was some wind.

We are still covering many parts of the lake, both Big Traverse and Little Traverse Bays.  Some Anglers have been doing more drifting than anchoring now. Typical colors of gold and chartreuse are best.  Mixing in more leeches and frozen shiners to the bait supply.

The forecast for the coming week is mid-80s with lows in the 50’s.

Stay safe and hope to see everyone soon!

We’ve been working Little Traverse Bay all week with good results

We’ve been working Little Traverse Bay all week with good results

We’ve been working Little Traverse Bay all week with good results. Floating with jigs has been bringing in a lot of nice fish. Plain hammered gold and chartreuse with hammered gold has been working really well. We saw some blistering hot days this last week in the mid-90s, just a week after getting some freezing temps and snow.

The forecast for the coming week is mid-80s with chance of thunderstorms almost every day. If you plan on coming up, bring your rain gear just in case. Winds are supposed to be in the teens with possible gusts into the 20mph range.

Stay safe and hope to see everyone soon!

The Walleye Master Guides are focusing on areas around structure near the 29 foot of water mark

The Walleye Master Guides are focusing on areas around structure near the 29 foot of water mark

We continue to work different areas across the lake.  We have anchored and jigged on the South Shore and East Border of Big Traverse Bay.  In Little Traverse we have mostly anchored and jigged but there has been a little bit of drifting.  The Walleye Master Guides are focusing on areas around structure near the 29 foot of water mark.  One day live Fathead minnows are best and on another the frozen Shiners. The wind has had an impact this past week.

We have started doing Shore lunches, so far there are no docks in at Garden Island so it has worked out when able to fish by Zippel Bay State Park.  Garden Island is a State Park and hopefully they will take on the task of making it useful by putting the docks in soon.  In past years we have put in the docks at Garden Island but with too many liability issues at stake we will have to wait for them to maintain it.

We continue to work on our projects with some of the remodeling waiting on parts.  The 3 bedroom river cabins as an example are still waiting on cabinets for over the stove so we can hang the new microwaves.  Additionally the new kitchen tables and chairs have not yet arrived so we currently are using the older ones.

Overnight temps this week look warmer with 40-50’s and daytime highs in the 70-80’s.

Anchored and jigging with a minnow is the best approach right now

Anchored and jigging with a minnow is the best approach right now

Anchored and jigging with a minnow is the best approach right now.  Some prefer drifting while others troll.  Our Walleye Master Guides have been anchored up at many different places around the lake and doing well.

Forecast this week looks to be nicer than the last few days. Starting out with some possible showers early, but looking to clear up and see some sun starting mid-week. Looks to be moderately windy with some higher gusts, with temps between the high 50’s and into the 70’s.

Great Times Ahead! Opening weekend is always fantastic

Great Times Ahead! Opening weekend is always fantastic.

Great Times Ahead!  Opening weekend is always fantastic.  We are super excited to get the season going.  We are also excited to have the restaurant back to normal, mostly. We are not going to have the buffet for breakfast, but otherwise the restaurant operation is back to pre covid.  We find it very ironic that just before our Minnesota Governor drops the mask mandate the President puts a mask mandate through the Coast Guard for people on the charter boats.  We do not think there will be much adherence to it, as last year nobody wore masks while on the charters and there were no incidents.  Also, we are back to normal housekeeping where we will be replacing towels and taking garbage daily,

So, about the fishing, it has to be the nicest opening weather we have ever had.  The fishing was good, not great, we maybe could have used a little wind, Shush, don’t say that too loud.  Many Walleye were caught, eaters, slot size, trophy sized and small ones.  Anchor and jig with a minnow is all you need.

We are seeing summer-like weather to start the week with highs into 80’s, yikes.  Thankfully by the end of the week it appears we may get normal temps for this time of year and some rain.  Which we need, but also do not want to say too loudly.

Sturgeon fishing has been going good and steady with a bunch of big ones being caught up and down the Rainy River

Sturgeon fishing has been going good and steady with a bunch of big ones being caught up and down the Rainy River.

Sturgeon fishing has been going good and steady with a bunch of big ones being caught up and down the Rainy River. The water level is still low so we could use some good rainy days in the upcoming weeks. Walleye opener is just around the corner and it is looking like another busy one.

The weather has been a little cold out on the water with the winds coming out of the north. Forecast for opener is low 60s for a high and mid 40s at night, with a chance of some intermittent showers.

We continue to finish up projects around the various properties. Our 3-bedroom cabins along the river are getting a little facelift with new cabinets, flooring, and living room furniture. The rest of May and most of June are filling up quick, and everyone is eager to get this season started.

We hope to see everybody this spring and summer!

Stay happy and healthy!
